A Creative Journey is open to all majors. This 3-week study abroad program nested within a six weeks special topics class on The Creative Process in a Global Context (COMM 4010 | 6 credits) to be offered summer 2025. The first week and a half of the course will be spent learning about the creative process—sometimes referred to as “design thinking” in other disciplines—and how this process can be applied to critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Three weeks will be spent in Barcelona and the last week and a half finishing up projects and reflecting on their experiences as a group. Students will study the fundamentals of visual communication and storytelling using the rich, colorful, and dynamic cultures of Spain. Emphasis will be placed on typography, design and photography, content creation and entrepreneurship. The city will be our classroom as we explore Barcelona’s Modernista architecture, its artists, media, signage, and creative culture. Numerous projects will help us meet the objectives of the course.
Program Overview
In this creative, hands-on class, students will be challenged to tell stories visually and to organize information in interesting, thoughtful ways. To achieve these goals students will be assigned exercises and projects that will require observing, interviewing, studying, researching, and combining images and words.
The Experience
In Barcelona, students will develop critical perspectives challenging contemporary conventions of color and form by studying and reflecting upon seminal works by Picasso, Dali and Gaudi. From a creative design aspect, these lessons are essential to explore. The influence of these visionaries on modern art, design and architecture are without parallel and are fundamental to the development of the students’ journeys.
