Assignments

All of our assignments incorporate visuals and are based on integrating the experiences they are having and the skills they have learned in other communication classes.

All students contribute to a class blog and social media, which must include images taken by students in the group.

All students keep a visual journal throughout the three-week trip. Students learn about activist, explorer and visual storyteller Dan Eldon’s visual journals and the legacy he left behind after he was killed in his early 20s.

Some assignments go into the journal specifically, such as six visual reflections they must do on places they visit such as La Sagrada Familia, the Picasso Museum or Tibidabo Amusement Park.

Students create a typography assignment where they explore typography in Barcelona and then create a project using typography that shares their experience of the city.

Students create their own museum, albeit small, that captures the essence of Barcelona.

Students create a visual profile or bio based on someone they meet, generally a native Catalonian. They may do this using any medium. Students may hand draw this assignment, use InDesign or Photoshop, create a photo-based story package, shoot a video story or construct an infographic or alternative story form.
