About 2 weeks into our trip, I decided to venture out alone to have lunch and a shopping day. Everyone was at the beach, and I wanted to have time for myself since I had been with a group for so long. I love hanging out with the group, but sometimes I need to be alone and relax because my social batter runs out. I researched ramen restaurants near me and decided to go to Takumi Tonkotsu Ramen at Glories. It looked delicious and well-priced. After deciding my destination I headed to the metro. This was the first time that I was on the metro by myself. I immediately got on the wrong train and panicked then got off at the next stop. I laughed at myself and got on the correct one. I got off the metro and walked around 10 minutes to the restaurant. The atmosphere was cool and vibey. I ordered spicy ramen with kimchi. This ramen was one of the best bowls I have ever eaten. It was rich and fulfilling. I then decided to do a little shopping in Glories. I made my way there with directions and first went to H&M. There a bought a beautiful black dress that I loved. I went into many shops and looked around for anything that caught my eye. After shopping for around 2 hours I finally decided that it was time to head back to Beyoo. I think this little adventure showed me many benefits of living in Barcelona. I felt so free and comfortable walking around a big city by myself. I did not have to worry about getting lost because I felt comfortable with where I was going. The independence I felt was uplifting, and I think that everyone should be able to have that feeling once in their life. I was able to fall in love with Barcelona and its culture. I would never have the guts to walk around Chattanooga without feeling unsafe, but this city is different and it feels like home. I have enjoyed my time there and can’t wait to return as soon as possible.

An unfortunate thievery occurred on the first weekend of being in Barcelona. I had a  glorious evening exploring the nightlife here with the group. It was almost 5:30 in the morning, and I had the epiphany to have an excursion to the beach to watch the sunrise.

I made it to the beach with not a worry in mind. I knew I needed to be careful with my purse because Barcelona is known for constant petty thefts. As I got to the beach, the sun was about to rise. I then decided to take a morning swim in the ocean that I had never seen before. It was freezing, and I quickly got out of the water. At this point, the story turns south.

As I sat on the sand, waiting for the sunrise, I noticed a man walking behind the group. He then proceeded to offer us marijuana, and we immediately turned him down. About a minute later, another man was trying to offer us weed, but this time he was much more aggressive and continually asked. At one point, my friend had to push him away because he would not leave. He eventually did,  and I went back to enjoying my morning. A minute later I knew that it had been a trick and my purse was gone.

Panic set in immediately, and I went back to Beyoo to call my mom. She told me that it was only two more weeks without an iPhone, and there were many challenges that I had to face without it. The service was awful and very slow and frustrating at first, but I have realized that maybe this was a blessing in disguise.

Exploring Barcelona without a phone has been difficult, but it has also been enlightening at the same time. I am not constantly looking at Tiktok, Instagram, or texting someone. I get to experience Barcelona in its raw, true form. Seeing the mountains and ocean without being glued to a device has been extremely therapeutic, and I seem to be more relaxed. I get to laugh and enjoy this beautiful city without being distracted by something that I constantly look at while I am home. The free feeling on this trip has been delightful.
